That Hug Meant Something

Tonight, I ran into an older gentleman who I speak to every time I see him. He’s super nice, and loves to play the scratch off lottery. I admit, I think he plays too much, but I can tell he gets a lot of joy from it. He’s missing two legs and is wheelchair bound.

When I hugged him tonight, he did something he usually doesn’t do. He started crying.  Then instinctually, I hugged him again and I asked him, “What are you crying for?” and he muttered, “Love”.  Then I asked him if I can hug him again just for good measure.

There are people in this world who just want others to show them some love. If I was a cynic, I would focus on the things that he shouldn’t be doing, but instead, I see him in his old age as someone who probably contributed a lot to this world.
